Co-organized with Dr. Alexandra R. Harrington, Chair of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Environmental Law Task Force on Plastic Pollution, this Bootcamp aims to equip youth with the crucial skills needed to engage meaningfully in global negotiations, with a special focus on the Plastic Treaty.

Topics Covered

The Bootcamp will encompass four comprehensive modules, each designed to provide participants with in-depth knowledge and skills:

  1. Module 1: International Law & Treaty Regimes
  2. Module 2: International Environmental Law
  3. Module 3: Treaty Negotiations
  4. Module 4: Case Study of the ILBI under UNEA 5/14

Skills Participants Will Gain

Upon completion of the Bootcamp, participants will:

  • Have a strong understanding of international law and treaty mechanisms.
  • Be knowledgeable about international negotiation processes, especially within the MEA context.
  • Understand the roles of various stakeholders in treaty negotiations.
  • Gain insights into the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) process for the Global Plastics Treaty.
  • Develop the ability to analyze treaty law, distinguishing between binding and voluntary measures.

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Alexandra R. Harrington is a Lecturer in Law (Environment) at Lancaster University. As the Chair of the IUCN WCEL Plastic Pollution Task Force and a key legal negotiator for the Global Plastics Treaty, Dr. Harrington brings extensive expertise in environmental law and treaty negotiations.
